PAWS of CNY Inc. is proud to be the recipient of a grant from the NBT Bank Fund, a component fund of the Oswego County Community Foundation. NBT Bank, in late 2014, transferred funds that were held for use to address the charitable needs of the residents of Oswego County into a field-of-interest. NBT Bank is a partner with the Oswego County Community Foundation to provide grants to nonprofit organizations that serve the residents of Oswego County. PAWS of CNY and their therapy pets have brought the people of Oswego County much enjoyment over the years and plan to use the grant to continue its outreach efforts.

PAWS of CNY Therapy Dogs Head to the Hill for High School Summer Camp
Syracuse University invited high school students to spend a few days on campus and be a part of a summer college program. On Wednesday, August 2, PAWS of CNY volunteers and their therapy dogs attended a picnic that was held by Advocates Inc., a Central New York-based organization that aims to empower individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. The picnic was held at Longbranch Park in Liverpool and the attendees were given the chance to enjoy the company and companionship of several PAWS of CNY therapy dogs. It was an evening of fun with music, food, and lots of engaging activities for all to enjoy.
PAWS of CNY Trading Cards Introduce Therapy Dogs to New Friends
PAWS of CNY’s therapy dogs are the real stars of our program. Walk through the halls with one of our therapy dogs in one of the many hospitals, nursing homes, or schools where our dogs regularly frequent, or even the Syracuse Hancock International airport, and you’ll hear patients, residents, travelers, and visitors greet the dogs by name. Often, those we interact with want a token to remember their new friend or a photo to share with friends and family. To give our new friends something to remember us, this year, PAWS of CNY created therapy dog trading cards for distribution at pet therapy visits and events.

The course is not mandatory in order for a dog to be evaluated. It is, however, encouraged for dogs who are good candidates for pet therapy work but may need assistance perfecting some of the certification criteria or for folks who just want to learn more about what it takes to be a certified therapy dog team.
Some of the topics this course will cover include:
– Signs of stress and body language
– Evaluation test items
– Handling skills and focus work
– How to read and respond appropriately to canine stress signals
– Introduction to and handling around medical apparatus
– Visit simulation to practice new skills (last class)
Classes are taught by Danielle Basciano, former President of PAWS of CNY, and a certified professional dog trainer.
Class Details:
Cost: $100.00
