PAWS of CNY, Inc., Central New York’s largest non-profit provider of pet-assisted wellness services, will be holding free therapy pet evaluations by appointment only at Kehoskie’s K-9 Care in Auburn on Sunday, March 25. Residents of Auburn and the surrounding Cayuga County region who are interested in certifying their dog or cat to participate in PAWS of CNY’s pet therapy program are encouraged to submit an application to PAWS of CNY and book an appointment. Qualified applicants will be scheduled for evaluations on March 25.
PAWS of CNY Appears on Bridge Street
PAWS of CNY Treasurer Martina St. Leger and her Labrador Mix, Dory, and Vice President Beth Tollar and her Golden Retriever, Cooper, were interviewed on Syracuse Channel 9’s morning program, Bridge Street, on Tuesday, January 16. Hosts TeNesha Murphy and Sistina Giordano spoke with Martina and Beth about the benefits of pet therapy, and the impact PAWS of CNY is making in the Central New York community.

Cicero Animal Clinic
This five-week therapy dog training course is designed to prepare dogs to pass the PAWS of CNY certification, as well as to provide ongoing education to dogs and handlers who are already certified. The course is not mandatory in order for a dog to be evaluated. It is, however, encouraged for dogs who are good candidates for pet therapy work but may need assistance perfecting some of the certification criteria or for folks who just want to learn more about what it takes to be a certified therapy dog team.
Some of the topics this course will cover include:
– Signs of stress and body language
– Evaluation test items
– Handling skills and focus work
– How to read and respond appropriately to canine stress signals
– Introduction to and handling around medical apparatus
– Visit simulation to practice new skills (last class)
Classes are taught by Danielle Basciano, former President of PAWS of CNY, and a certified professional dog trainer.

Class Length: 5 sessions
Class Size: up to 8 dogs

Barnes & Noble Bookfair Raises Money for PAWS of CNY
On Sunday, December 17, PAWS of CNY held a bookfair fundraiser at Barnes & Noble in Clay. PAWS of CNY treated young shoppers to a dog-themed Christmas ornament craft while a variety of fluffy, friendly, certified therapy pets greeted shoppers and helped to ease holiday shopping stress.
