PAWS of CNY Participates in Elmcrest Take a Break for Wellness Event

PAWS of CNY was pleased to again participate in the Elmcrest “Take a Break for Wellness” event. The annual event aims to encourage teachers and staff members at Elmcrest Children’s Center to learn about wellness-based organizations in the community. Elmcrest Children’s Center is a multi-service treatment and education center for children with emotional and behavioral needs. PAWS of CNY’s therapy dog teams have been visiting with students at Elmcrest for the past several years. PAWS of CNY volunteer Hilary Gamble attended this year’s wellness fair with her Labrador, Preston.

“Preston loved having people come up to see him and pet him,” said Gamble. “I think every person who walked by took a minute to visit with Preston, to share their own love for animals, or to share a quick story about themselves. He has a special way of making people feel comfortable.”

PAWs of CNY Volunteers like Hilary participate in PAWS of CNY’s pet assisted wellness services with their own pets. To become a volunteer, the pet must pass the PAWS of CNY certification process, which includes a temperament and behavior test, and a three-month long on-site evaluation. PAWS of CNY’s certification process ensures only the most qualified animals, like Preston, are approved for pet assisted wellness services in the community.

“Preston has an uncanny ability to read people, their emotions, and their needs,” said Gamble. “For some, he will be very still and even lie down. For others, he makes an effort to engage them, or lean into them, or even touch them gently with his nose if the person wants to get very close. He is an incredible presence with a special soul.”
