PAWS of CNY Volunteers Provide Pet Therapy Education to Students at Sherburne-Earlville Elementary School

Pet Therapy Education Madison County

By Mary Beth Coniglio

PAWS of CNY Volunteers Jessica Marabella and Joanne Shibley and her Pug Quincy recently visited Sherburne-Earlville Elementary School to provide students with education on pet safety, and the benefits of pet therapy.

Jessica gave a presentation on pet safety, and taught the students when it is safe, and unsafe to approach dogs, and what warning signs or welcoming signs to look for in dogs. She also provided information about PAWS of CNY and the work they do in the community, and what it takes to be a therapy dog.

Then Jessica introduced Joanne and her dog Quincy. Quincy showed the students the obedience skills required to become a therapy dog. Joanne explained to the students that Quincy visits at the hospital and they asked what he does there, and where else he is allowed to go as a therapy dog. After the question and answer session, the students were allowed to pet the dogs, which they really enjoyed.

It was a very educational and fun visit for both the students and the volunteers
