When tasked with a community service education project, students at Eagle Wings Academy knew exactly what type of community service group they wanted to learn more about: PAWS of CNY and its therapy dogs. Eagle Wings Academy exists to offer a Christ-centered, Biblically-based education to urban children. PAWS of CNY volunteer Carol Slagle met with Eagle Wings Academy students on October 23 with her miniature labradoodle, Jack, to teach the students about PAWS of CNY and the benefits of therapy dog work.
Slagle explained to the students the history of the PAWS of CNY program, what dogs need to do in order to become certified, the types of facilities where PAWS of CNY volunteers, and what dogs must do to maintain their therapy dog certification. The students were excited to learn, and asked many questions about the organization.
Jack also demonstrated for the students the behavior and temperament skills that all of PAWS of CNY’s therapy dogs must exhibit in order be a part of the program and serve the community. According to Slagle, Jack demonstrated sit, stay, leave-it, drop, recall, and other behavior tests to the students’ appreciation.
Thank you to the Eagle Wings Academy for being interested in learning more about the benefits of pet assisted wellness services. We are proud to share the benefits of pet therapy work to a new generation of members of our community.
