PAWS of CNY was proud to support the 6th annual Syracuse University and SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) Shack-a-Thon to benefit Habitat for Humanity. Students who participate in the event construct and sponsor a shack on the University Quad and then spend time in the structure for three days and two nights. Various events take place on the Quad during the event, encouraging students to come out and visit the camping students. PAWS of CNY offered camping students, and their visitors, a warm, friendly paw for two hours on Thursday September 25.
Diane Rogers and Mary Berger attended the event with their shih tzu, Sammy.
“Sammy had a great time at the SU Shack-A-Thon event” said Rogers. “When we arrived there was already a very long line of students waiting to pet the dogs. It was very clear that they were anxious to see us. When students and Sammy met there was a great deal of excitement, on both sides. Sammy loves everyone and is always happy to be petted, held and loved.”
The Shack-a-Thon event was one of several pet therapy events that PAWS of CNY has attended at Syracuse University and ESF over the past several years. Students are continually appreciative of the opportunity to take a break from the pressure of academics, and enjoy some pet-assisted wellness.
“Students mentioned over and over how much they missed their own dogs and how grateful they were to have this opportunity,” said Rogers. “From this event and other de-stress events that we have attended it is clear that the dogs help. Whether petting, hugging or just having a dog sit quietly in their laps you can see the effect it has on both student and dog. Both benefit.”
