On October 22, PAWS of CNY volunteer teams attended a student de-stress event at Syracuse University’s Lawrinson Hall. The event aimed to give students an opportunity to take a break from their rigorous schedules and connect with a warm, smiling, friendly, therapy dog.
The event was held on the lawn in front of Lawrinson Hall, giving students an opportunity to re-charge their emotional batteries on their way to and from class. One hundred students stopped by throughout the four hour event to visit Heather Philip and her labrador Mowgli, and Rick Casper and his husky Frostyn.
A recent study by the University of California at Los Angeles found that college students are reporting that they feel more overwhelmed and stressed than students fifteen years prior. The study identified that 30% of all college freshmen reported feeling stressed a great deal of the time. The healing benefits of the human-animal bond has proven to be an effective way for students to ease some of the pressure and tension that they feel during their busy school schedules
